What our badges mean

Revised October 11, 2026 · Version 1.1

Every badge on this site says something specific. This page says exactly what, and just as importantly what it does not say.

The short version

Badges have different meanings: some are self-declared claims, some identify paid memberships, and a verification badge records only the limited check described for it. No badge predicts or guarantees work quality, price, safety or solvency.

Family Owned

What it means: the business told us that a family holds majority ownership and at least one family member works in it day to day.

What we checked: nothing. This is a declaration the business made, and the badge says so wherever it appears.

When it goes away: when the business tells us ownership changed, or when a report or something public — a franchise-development page, a stock listing, one phone number across many markets — gives us reason to look and we are not satisfied.

Size is not a factor. A fourth-generation firm with several locations in one metro still counts.

Locally Owned

The same declaration, for a business that is independently and locally owned but not family owned. A locally owned franchisee can carry this. It never carries Family Owned.

Badges are never for sale

Family Owned, Locally Owned and Verified Listing cannot be bought at any price. A business affirms the definition when it claims an ownership badge; we do not require documents. We can remove a badge at any time, and removing a badge does not remove the listing.

Verified Listing

What it means: on the date shown, a person confirmed the phone number reached the business, the email worked, and the links went somewhere safe and real.

What it does not mean: we did not check licences, insurance, bonding, criminal history, complaint records, or the quality of anyone's work. We do not run background checks, and we will never say we did.

It is a point-in-time check, not a subscription. Details change and we do not re-check continuously.

Local Influencer

What it means: a person read this influencer's work, and they live in and post about this city. It is a judgement, made by us, on a date. The seat is given by invitation and cannot be bought.

It is not a measure of audience size, and it is not an endorsement of anything they recommend.

Among the First

A launch designation: they joined early. It carries no claim about quality and is not for sale.

Sponsored and Featured identify membership tiers, not quality checks. Paid membership can affect the default directory order, and ad placements are separately administered. Staff-granted complimentary memberships are identified as complimentary where displayed; a tier alone is not proof that a particular payment occurred. See Advertising disclosure for ordering and paid-placement details.

Promotional badges

First Responder Discount, Pet Friendly, Everyone's Welcome, Grand Opening and similar badges describe an offer or a fact the business asserts about itself, not something we verified. A business can add them, and a business can lose them for claiming an offer it does not honour.

What you should do anyway

Before you hire anybody found here — or anywhere — confirm they hold the licence your state requires for the work, ask for proof of insurance, get the scope and price in writing, and check references. A directory is a starting point for a conversation, not a substitute for one.

Something wrong with a badge?

Report it from the business's page, or email support@vissabl.com. We would rather hear it from you than let it stand.
